New Visitors Start Here!

It's nearly three years since Eddie and I decided to start this website. It came about out of a desire to share Eddie's amazing collection of Gilberd photos as widely as possible. In the years that have followed, we have done our best to share all the Gilberd memorabilia we have been able to find. Statistics for this website show that in this time we have had a total of over 35,000 page views from all over the world. For those who are interested you can see where all our visitors come from in the table below - who would have guessed there would be a large community of old Gilberdians in Singapore!

I'm conscious that there is now a terrific amount of content on the website. It may not be easy for new visitors to access it without trawling through all our old posts. This article will provide links to the most popular content we have shared over the last few years and we hope you find it a useful starting point.

Photographs

  • You'll find links to all of Eddie's school holiday photos on this page.
  • Eddie took some shots of the Language Huts just before and just after they were decommissioned.
  • Eddie also took plenty of photos of school life in the 1970s and 1980s.
  • We are so lucky that three past pupils photographed the Gilberd at North Hill and they each capture something different in the images they took. Richard Parker took his photos of an empty school one weekend in 1980. Steve Turner documented school life in 1982 as the migration to Highwoods was fully underway. (The second and third collections of photos by Steve can be found by clicking on the links.) Finally, Katy Oxton took a series of photos in 1985 as the North Hill site was closing.
  • There are a selection of images of the Highwoods site from the early 1980s here and here.
  • You can see photos of Princess Alexandra's visit to Highwoods to open the new school buildings in 1981 here.
Film
  • You can take a virtual tour of the Old Gilberd in the company of Eddie, Richard Parker and Jonathan Moran. We had a lot of fun making this film and we are glad so many people have enjoyed revisiting the old school with us.
  • The only known cine film from the 1960s can be seen here, with commentary by Eddie and Jonathan.
Documentation

  • If you'd like to download a copy of Eddie and Steve Turner's book 'The Gilberd - North Hill' you'll find it here.
  • A full set of copies of 'The Raven' and 'The Gilberdian' from 1951-1967 can be found here.
  • If you are interested in Gilberd Bulletins and letters from the 1970s you'll find a good selection here.
  • You can download the 1968 and 1969 issues of the school magazine, 'Image' here. Certainly the best school magazine I've ever seen.
  • Alice Twyman’s history of the school between 1912-1967 can be found here
  • If you want to read the Gilberd School Logs from 1967-85 you can! These have been cleared by the Gilberd for publication, save for a few understandable redactions.

Memories

  • Dr Stephen Willoughby recounts his memories of school life in the 1960s. You'll find articles about 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968-1970 if you click on the highlighted links. Stephen was also kind enough to share his recollections about a school trip to France in 1968 that went badly wrong!
  • Mike Woolnough details his fascinating account of school life in the 1950s.
  • An article about the history of the 'Cock and Pie' can be found here

Pretty much all the surviving material we know about has now been scanned and uploaded to this website. I'm sure there is more potential content out there but it's likely to come in future from our visitors. Whilst the majority of content we have published is about the North Hill years, we are very keen to include photos and recollections about Highwoods as well.

So, if you have an old trunk in the attic with school photos or bulletins we'd love to hear from you. We are happy to scan and return any photos if you only have hard copies, so feel free to get in touch at eddiesphotos@icloud.com
