Extra! Extra! Gilberd Bulletins and Letters from the 1970s
I'm extremely grateful to Richard Parker (who went to the Gilberd between 1971-78) for sharing an amazing collection of old Gilberd end of term bulletins and other correspondence from his time at the school.
Richard's parents kept meticulous records and saved the majority of correspondence he brought home, thereby preserving a little bit of Gilberd history that would otherwise be lost to time. I had completely forgotten about the end of term bulletins in which staff wrote about events and achievements at the school. The full list of teaching staff also brought back a lot of memories as a few names had faded from my recollection.
There is some wonderful correspondence to enjoy, a particular highlight being a letter from Mr Powell Davies to parents about the various merits of British and Japanese slide rules - I can actually hear his voice in my head while reading the letter!
I found the opening paragraphs of the prospectus/mission statement for the Sixth Form rather moving and more relevant today than ever. There is so much to enjoy in all the various bulletins I won't spoil them with a preview here, except to say there are one or two amusing annotations to look out for.
I've scanned all of Richards documents and gathered them together for anyone to view or download here. Some of the file sizes are larger than others so those may take a little longer to load.
If you happen to still have any Gilberd correspondence from your time at the school do get in touch at eddiesphotos@icloud.com
