Final Assembly - 50th Anniversary Reunion for the Class of 1971-78
My thanks to Richard Parker for getting in contact to share his amazing old school photos and reunion plans. He has recently been in touch with the school to confirm the exact date his 1971 intake started. James Mitchell, Deputy Head at the Gilberd, confirmed that the headmaster’s records state that the Autumn term in 1971 began on Tuesday 7th September. The Monday was a non-pupil day for staff meetings.
Richard promptly contacted the Sixth Form College and booked a Reunion for the nearest date - Saturday 4th September 2021. The college put Richard in touch with Mr Ross who kindly agreed to provide a tour of the school on that date for former pupils.
Richard would love to hear from any former students who started at the Gilberd in 1971 and are interested in attending the reunion. “We’re hoping as many people as possible can join us for our 50th anniversary. As this might be our 'final assembly' we’d also be delighted if staff or other past pupils who were at the school in the 1970s would like to join us,” he said.
For more information about the reunion you can contact Richard by email at boyrich@talk21.com or through the Facebook group Gilberd 71-78: Final Assembly
Even if you are not interested in attending the reunion, I'd urge you to visit Richard's Facebook Group (which is open for all to see) as he has a collection of black and white photos of the school that he sneaked over the gate to take one weekend in 1980. They are absolutely amazing and because there are no people around the school looks unusually peaceful and quiet.
