A Small Gallery of 1980s Teachers

I’ve been holding on to a small number of Katy Oxton’s photos of Gilberd teachers in the hope that a few more might turn up to accompany them. I’m very grateful to Robin Hart for sending me his own collection of 80s photos, amongst which there were a couple of images I could add to this selection.

First up, Katy managed to capture Mrs Rees in the middle of a maths lesson. Incidentally Mrs Rees is in her mid 90s now and I’m pleased to say she is still attending Gilberd reunions.

Robin took this great photo of Martin Riley (who I incidentally ran into at the Mercury Theatre last week)…

I absolutely love this photo Katy took of Colin Laker…

She also took another photo of Mr Laker on the staff room steps chatting with students…

Robin managed to capture Barry Young who I remember well as he was my third year form teacher. As he taught physics and chemistry I seem to remember we nicknamed him ‘Barry Bung’!

Finally, Katy’s photo of Mr Powell Davies in the classroom (below) has previously appeared in the Colchester Gazette and on this site but she also took another one of him.

In this iconic image of him walking around the school you can almost smell the pipe tobacco trailing in his wake!

If you happen to have any photos of teachers or fellow students from your time at the school please do drop us a line at eddiesphotos@icloud.com and we’ll be sure to feature them.

You may be interested to know that you can find photos of Mr Rowe, Mr Delves, Mr Allington, Mr Hurford, Mr Smith, Mr MacAleavy and Mr Langton among the images of Princess Alexandra’s visit in 1981.

There will be a lot more of Robin’s photos to see at the weekend so watch this space.

  1. What a marvellous teacher Mr Powell Davies was. It only occurred to me in later years that many of the older teachers would have fought in WW2 and I bitterly regret not asking them about their experiences and showing the due deference these brave men deserved.
