Gilberd School Head Students
Over the course of the last couple of years I have been fortunate enough to visit the Gilberd School at Highwoods a few times to pick my way through different parts of the school archive. It's thanks entirely to James Mitchell, the Head of School, that I have been allowed to access and share some of this wonderful material. James is a former pupil himself and hugely passionate about the history of the school.
Although the school buildings are not familiar to me, when I walk down the corridors I am surrounded by familiar faces and images. At every turn there are reminders of Gilberd history - that's all down to James. It's not just pictures on the wall either. If there is a framed photo of a member of staff there will be some wording to accompany the image, explaining who the person is and what they did. Take a look at this lovely tribute to Mr Powell Davies.
In his spare time James has been researching the identities of all the Head Students at the school. Sadly, a record was never kept so it has been a piece of detective work to assemble the list from lots of different sources. (A few contributors to this website have filled in some of the gaps.) That piece of research is now concluded, resulting in a complete Roll of Honour which is on display at the school. (You can see an image of this at the top of this page.)
Not content with completing one school history project James has undertaken another, this one arguably more challenging than the last. He is now trying assemble a list of all the Deputy Head Students! You can see how far he has got and where gaps still exist on the list below.
