High Quality Scans of Original Prints

Firstly, my apologies for the lack of updates to the site recently. Family matters have dominated my time for the last couple of months but I'm pleased to say normal service is resumed.

A while back Matt Plummer from the Evening Gazette allowed me to make fresh scans of all the 8 x 10 glossy prints held in the Gazette archive. Most visitors to this site will be familiar with these photos but won't have seen them in this quality. I'm featuring the photos that show groups of staff and pupils as the extra detail helps us to see everyone in the shot more clearly. (You'll need to click on each image to see a full size version.)

Let's start with this photo from the 6th July 1979.

It's an unusual photo as it features pupils from different year groups. I recognise a number of faces from my first year intake but there are clearly older pupils in the photo as well. Fortunately the article written to accompany the image still survives, so we can see the aim was to match the composition of the photo of the school builders from 1912.

One thing I did notice from the high quality scan is the pupil hiding in the front row who really didn't want to have their photo taken that day!

Next it's another familiar image, this time from the 9th February 1979. We can now clearly see Mr Brookes standing half way up the drive and I'm sure that is Mr Richards' mini parked on the left-hand side near the Large Hall.

This next photo is from the 6th March 1981 and features the Gilberd Team who won the first round of their Schools Public Speaking Competition.

The article that accompanied the photo identifies the team (left to right) as Claire Burch, Valerie Piper and Aurely de Smith.

Finally, this very well known photo from the 19th July 1985 has hopefully never looked better.

Comments

  1. Poor old Mr Brookes was probably on his way to drive a service bus.

  2. The three boys at the front on the 9 Feb 1979 photo are, right to left, Stephen Huckstepp, Michael Woodnott and Trevor Snowling
